I was visiting one of our seniors this week and she made an observation that really made me stop and think. She had been reading in her quiet time about King David and his life, and had come to the conclusion that if he were a leader in today’s church, he would most likely be disqualified because of his past. Wow. That’s startling.
And true. Think about it – he was a confessed adulterer who arranged a hit on his lover’s husband. His family was a wreck, and God refused to allow him to construct the temple. But God chose to use him anyway. I can’t help but think that she’s on to something.
I was just as amazed at the person who brought this to my attention. This sweet lady is the widow of a man who pastored traditional churches his entire life. She is more familiar with the traditional, established church than I could ever be. And she’s still not afraid to make keen observations, no matter how painful. And because I know her, I know why: her allegiance is to her God, not to a church or any tradition.
Which segues perfectly into this Sunday’s message: God is the God of second chances. Aren’t you glad God doesn’t stamp us as “unusable” the second we screw up? As the screaming evangelists say, “that’ll preach”. Can’t wait to share this in greater detail on Sunday…
