Anybody besides me remember Petra?
You know – the band I learned to drum to? (Louie Weaver still rocks). The band that gave my parents heart attacks? The band that made keyboard solos cool?
I’ve been delving into the archives recently, dusting off some [extremely] old cd’s and loading them onto the ol’ iPod. And while on a flight earlier this week I pulled up some Petra and had a listen.
And I realized why they were so popular. The music was solid (the guitar riffs were tight, and there were only a few keyboard solos after all). The lyrics were surprisingly deep [for the 80's]. And the vocals were quite ‘in vogue’ (think ‘Journey‘ on steroids).
So, with the recent return of the popularity of 80′s music, I thought I’d bring back some 80′s Christian Rock to go with Tears For Fears and Culture Club. I hereby anoint Petra (as well as Stryper and DeGarmo & Key) officially ‘cool’ again. And I should know.
And for all you haters out there, you won’t be laughing quite so hard when it becomes obvious I’ve started a new fad. It’ll be the gnarliest thing since The Rubik’s Cube – just wait and see…
Wow! Ummmm, I don’t think so . . . not cool . . . sorry. Thanks for playing.
I gotta agree with ya on this one. This Means War was by far the coolest Christian tape (and the only Christian tape) I ever bought. Although one of my friends listened to the song “I am Available” and thought they were singing “I am a Vegetable”. Not as cool. Thanks for the trip.
Serious hair days back in the 80′s dude. Does it make us old that this stuff was right before CD’s came out and now they’re being replaced with downloads? I’m even having 8 track flashbacks!
Yeah, “Beyond Belief” was the first cd I ever bought. And I remember when it was new technology.
So I’m old. So what…
