Now that I’m getting back in the groove, it’s becoming more and more clear the ‘big ideas’ God had for me during my time away. As usual, my head was spinning with dozens of thoughts at one time, but the fog is lifting and I’m realizing exactly what the “takeaways” were for me…
1. Be more dependent. The simple truth is that no matter how talented / devoted / driven we are, we are NOTHING without God. I didn’t realize it, but I had gotten to the place where I felt like everything rose and fell on my leadership ability and speaking ability and people skills. When that happens, you pay too much attention to numbers and not enough attention to the life-change that still happens one person at a time. God (thankfully) brought me back to a place of complete dependence on him. RPC doesn’t need more Timm, it needs more Jesus. And from now on that’s my goal…
2. Be more independent. This one is huge. I am different from most pastors you’ll meet, but I was still way too concerned about keeping a few certain people happy. The truth is that my generation is at a crossroads – we stand between two generations of people (40′s-50′s & 20′s-30′s) that are NOTHING alike. I repeat NOTHING alike. And if we’re going to reach one, we’re going to become irrelevant (and sometimes even offensive) to the other. So be it. What’s relevant to people in their 20′s is often also offensive to people in their 50′s. So be it. God has called me to reach a NEW generation, and the bible is pretty clear that NEW wine can’t be put into OLD wineskins. So be it. From here on out, I’m living to please God and my family. In that order.
