Taking Breaks, part 2

Posted: July 1, 2010 in vacation

Today we’ll continue the discussion about the importance of taking breaks.

Vacation is necessary.  From time to time I hear things like “I haven’t taken a vacation in __ years.”  And while the person telling me is usually proud of the fact, I always think to myself “you’re headed for a meltdown.”  In most cases these same people are wound tighter than a swiss watch, and they’ll probably lose it the next time life throws them a hurdle (which is gonna happen sooner or later).

The truth is we were wired for intense seasons of work followed by time to allow our bodies, minds and spirits to rest.  Of the 10 commandments, I find it interesting that the one regarding Sabbath rest is the longest.  Charles Spurgeon<link> said, “If you don’t come apart for a while, you’ll come apart in a while.”

It is your duty to take timely rest.

Sometimes the ones saying they haven’t taken a vacation in a zillion years are the ones who need it, so that we can have a break from their grouchy selves!!!
